Ravenel to declare candidacy ... against Rainey?

For sometime, I’ve watched the ongoing spat between GOP Treasurer candidate Thomas Ravenel and John Rainey somewhat puzzled.

However, as the exchange of words has continued, I’ve grown increasingly concerned. But Sunday, after services were over, my priest, knowing I’m a political gadfly and hobbyist of sorts, asked me what that was all about.

All I could do is shrug and say “I wish I knew.”

When the spat reaches to that level of the public, any thinking person has to wonder just what in the heck is going on here.

This is about as bizarre as whatever motivated Patterson, who is well into his eighties and facing considerable questions about his ability to serve as Treasurer, to seek re-election in the first place.

Is Ravenel running against Grady Patterson, or John Rainey? Doesn’t he understand that time and effort spent on debating his fellow Republicans is less to raise funds and get his message out?

This continuing war of words may very well make people wonder if his party really is united behind him, and give Rainey’s criticisms a far wider audience than they normally would have received. This is not what one wants to do when facing a well-known incumbent who traditionally gets a noticeable amount of cross-over support from GOP voters for his re-election campaigns.

Grady Patterson is a real South Carolina hero. His record of service to his country, in World War II, and to his state as Treasurer, is beyond reproach. Patterson’s legacy of service, like many of his generation, leaves a strong legacy and challenge to those who follow. However, in his later years, he has earned the right to retire. His last point was proven in 1998, when he took back his job. His re-election may well result in the sacrifice of what little time he has left to rest on his laurels and enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

Of course, this presumes that he shows up for work, and that he's not on deep freeze in some morgue so as to assure his loyal supporters ... uh, staff members ... continued job security.

To win, Thomas Ravenel has to show he has the character and leadership abilities to match those of Patterson’s. He can ill afford to come across as petty, immature, and confrontational, especially against an incumbent whose campaigns have stressed Patterson’s record of commitment to public service, and his personal character.

Many in Patterson’s generation learned to aim their weapons towards the enemy and use them with powerful effect. This seems to be a lesson Ravenel has yet to learn.

I do like Thomas and support him but he does need to just get out of this war of words with Mr. Rainey. Of course I do Mr. Rainey started it and was out of line to all the GOP when he did. I also believe that whatever boards that Mr. Rainey is on per appointment or other by the Governor or GOP he should resign it or them. You can believe this did not help Lindsey Graham in his future reelection bid not that Thomas is going to run but it will give fodder to any challenger in the GOP ranks. Mr. Rainey due to this action is no friend of mine. He must think he is awful special.

Good point. Rainey should have been more respectful of his party's nominee in the first place.

But in this, like many things, nobody is totally wrong or right. However, Ravenel is the one who can pull the plug on this, just as he was the one who escalated it in the first place.

You make some good points Earl as does Moye. I too am supporting Thomas just as I did in 2004 when he was running for the US Senate nomination. I hope he does run against Lindsey Graham in 2008 and I hope he wins. Like both of you I am not sure that he has chosen the right way to handle Mr. Rainey's criticisms. I don't particularly care for the Raineys; they do consider themselves better than most people. They think of themselves as very different from you and me and Thomas Ravenel. After all they have money and they live on the Boulevard in Anderson.

You make some excellent points Earle and moye. Thomas may well be wasting time and effort here. I too support him for Treasurer. I think he will make an excellent one. Mr. Patterson has done a good job but his time has passed. Thomas must know something about managing money or he would not be as successful as he as been in business. As for John Rainey, he and his brother both believe that they are very different from the rest of us. After all, they have money and they live on the Boulevard in Anderson.

Yup, the subtext of I bought my share of Lindsey and I won't have you flush my capital investment in political capital is what I've been reading from this fratch. As much as any outspoken Goldwater or Reagan Republican is a threat to the cabal that wants to run it all, so stands the T-Rav as did a populist Congressman Sanford and likewise a Liberman on the other side of the aisle.
  6. west_rhino 21/8/06 11:09
Earl one postscript, G-Pat's generation kept Reagan's eleventh commandment, John Rainey's fratraicidal actions don't appear to be incidental friendly fire, ergo T-Rav may well be pointing his battery toward the enemy and calling a fire for effect.

It does however identify Mr. Ravenel for some as one outside the upstate wannabe kingmakers.

Patterson is dead and just providing a job security for that political hack, Trav Robertson.

The Treasurer's office is nothing more than staffing for Democrats who their party can't afford to hire.

Since Hodges lost, they don't have anyone else who can provide life support to the Dems via the state payroll.

Must suck being losers. Maybe we need to find Lee Atwater's jumper cables and keep them handy so as to keep Patterson alive long enough for Robertson and others to find private-sector employment.

I'm sure Wal-Mart is hiring. He should start looking.

Ravenel really is a pretty-boy dilanette. All those rich brat jerks who go around proclaiming "I wear the ring" are just like him.

There are plenty of Repubs who are thinking what Rainey is saying, they're just afraid of Rod Shealy smearing them if htey speak up, or those SCRG attack dogs.

He just sees this as a stepping stone to becoming the biggest airhead in the US Senate. Don't be fooled by his BS!!!

Don't think much of T-Rav or of a 150 year old incumbent. But frankly if Rav. is the Treasurer and runs for Senate it won't be "2 years" to "finish the job" it will be more like one year or 6 months. He wouldn't take office until 07 and would have to start running at the end of next year or ealier to mount and effective primary campaign and then general election. So Grady Patterson is probably slow for his age and in general at that age, but if he shows up to work even 2 days out of 3 that may be more work than we get out of boy wonder. What an unappealing set of choices.

It takes someone like T-Rav to stand up against the status-quo. All other elected officials just become POLITICIANS.
  11. Anonymous 21/8/06 20:24
What an amazing race. Patterson is past his prime and Ravenel has never done anything other than lose a US Senate race and use his daddy's name to raise capital for his businesses.

I might have to go with the old geezer, because I am tired of all these dadgummed wives and clildren of politicians running. You got President Bush. You got Governor Bush. You got Hillary Clinton. You got Mike Campbell. You got Jimmy Carter's son out in Nevada. You got Lincoln Chafee. More and more, our political class seems like peerage.

With Drew Theodore on the Democratic side so called T-Rav on the GOP side, South Carolina is doing our share to help that.

Take a double dose of geritol Grady, and go win one more.
  12. SC-Conservative 21/8/06 20:30
Ravenel has the right ideas for our state's finances, but the continuing spat with Rainey is the only thing that has kept him from winning in November. I can just see this race which he would have won going down the drain.

drew theodore is the best democrat running this year, and it'll be fun watching him shut eckstrom's yap for good this fall.

you t-rav fans sure like the kool aid. why don't you go get some of the party favors that SCRG candidates like, as in brad-caine, or maybe a family values lecture with shirley hinson and wallace scarboro?

maybe if ya'll are doing coke and each other, you'll shut up and leavce the rest of us alone.
  14. atwaters ghost 22/8/06 11:05
picker, you're enjoying the sour grape kool aid I see...

    Earl,
I've never met Ravenel before. He seems like a good/respectable guy, and then other times I have heard him in interviews just come across like a jerk. What's your opinion of him as a person and do you honestly think he is fit or qualified to be SC Treasurer? E-mail me your answer if you would prefer not to answer on here. Hope all is well down in Summerville

The state is reporting that this damn joke of a debate is going to be televised on the South Carolina channel and on the ETV website.

Rod Shealy, king for a day in June, is trying his best to make his candidate look like an ass.
  17. SC-Conservative 23/8/06 01:12
I talked to T-Rav for several minutes during Andre Bauer's victory party on June 27. I had never talked to him before but he was very engaging, nice and talked about some of the issues with me in a sincere manner.
BTW, Richard Eckstrom is T-Rav's coach for the debate with Rainey.
  18. Anonymous 23/8/06 07:29
eckstrom got his butt kicked by patterson. now he's helping ravenel, supposedly to beat patterson.

does anyone see the irony in this?

ravenel, for all his sound bites and pretty-boy "I'm a Reagan Republican", and "I wear the Ring" crap, needs a debate coach? oh, ain't that hilarious?

rainey found the cracks, and more and more they're show. t-rav will have all the time in the world to hop bars and chase tail next year, because he's gonna be a loser.

when he's out there saying how he wants to be the governor's third vote on the budget and control board, why doesn't he tell us WHY the governor can't count on a 4 to 1 majority at the present?

i guess even pretty boy is smart enough to know it is bad politics to admit it's because the governor's poor leadership skills have alienated two of the four.

the fossil will beat the brat this fall. rainey saw him exactly for what he is, and so will voters.

put THAT in your kool aid and drink it boys
  19. Moye 23/8/06 23:01
I believe this deal with Rainey may hurt the Governor more than Thomas when all is said and done. No matter what Patterson is dead so to speak. No pun intended. Maybe a little. It seems our Governor has appointed a few that if you look deep ain't what you see. Such as Rainey. No one that is suppose to have his status with the GOP should be a attack dog for Lindsey. Also we need to elect a GOP Treasurer and after that we need to bury the Democratic party and Patterson.

all you dipshit kool-aid drinking bootlickers would do about anything to kiss up to that arrogant jerk who cares more about his ambitons, the sound of his own voice, and his pretty face in the mirror than the people of south carolina.

all of you make me sick, about as sick as the jerk who runs this blog. if only you knew what he was really all about.

one day you'll see the handwriting on the wall about how you sold this state out. when you do, i'll spring for the rat poisen milkshakers.
