Survey of bloggers and readers - go participate!

This came my way today regarding a survey being conducted by a doctoral student in Louisiana who is studying blogs that discuss and impact state-level politics. She's taking the time to learn about us and hopefully shed a little light on the things we bloggers, as well as our audiences, are able to accomplish, so the least we can do is help her out:

Blogs & state politics research (Emily Metzgar)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Emily Metzgar emetzg1@lsu.edu

Dear Colleagues,

I'm a doctoral student in media and public affairs at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and my research focuses on the impact of weblogs on state politics around the country. This is a quick reminder of my request for your help in compiling data for my research.

A quick profile of my research is available here:
http://governing.typepad.com/13thfloor/2007/04/queen_of_the_st.html.

I have prepared an online survey for both bloggers and blog readers to complete. The survey is available online through June 30 at the following link:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=mb2MRtsLhdFv5NW9LLmdiA%3d%3d.

I would be grateful if you could take the time to complete this survey and to circulate it among your colleagues. If you like, I'd be happy to keep you informed of my findings as my research progresses.

Many thanks for considering this request. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments about this -- like any good doctoral student I'm always happy to discuss my research!

Best regards,

Emily Metzgar

Cutting edge stuff here man. I bet she is the first person to do this study. Look at you Earl, all influential and such.

I agree it is cutting edge stuff. But actually this came my way via an academic list-serv, not because I'm that important in the blogosphere.

Since my field is communication, stuff like this comes my way, but it is the first time I've seen someone doing research in this specific area.

Pretty neat idea, I'll be interested to see the results. There certainly is an impact, but it still seems when it comes down to election day Internet popularity and the passion of bloggers doesn't always have a huge effect as one might think.

erik - i'll agree that we're not a mass-marketing tool, but there has been a number of major and minor SC political stories that came from a blogsite.

bloggers do indeed perform a sort-of agenda-setting function for news media, where blogs become newsmakers by way of providing leads and leaking information that may miss other news media outlets. we don't often persuade the masses, but those who doubt that we don't make news ... just ask dan rather if he got the memo.

i just wish we'd get more credit for our work.
