Deputy William Howell - Thank you

We wanted to take a moment to pay our respects to the family and colleagues of Orangeburg County Deputy William Howell, who was killed in the line of duty near Holly Hill last Friday night.

Howell was well-known across the Lowcountry and well-respected by many in law enforcement. Such people are hard to find, and impossible to replace.

We understand that Deputy Howell had a promotion pending, and was waiting for such a time that his entire family could gather to receive it. Sheriff Williams intends to honor him and his family by ensuring that he will receive this promotion as his final act of duty. We couldn't think of a more deserving tribute.

Stories on the Charleston Post and Courier and Orangeburg Times and Democrat websites have discussion, including testimonials and thanks for Howell's service.

This will surely be a difficult time for many in Lowcountry law enforcement, who have seen a number of their own lost in the last year or so. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Ironically, the piece of human crap who killed Deputy Howell, Derrick Buras, was killed shortly afterwards by his estranged wife. We consider this to be well-deserved justice for Mr. Buras.

No doubt Ms. Duras was under an unbelievable amount of duress that evening, after being the victim of an assault and watching a murder of a deputy. She probably believed that he would again be released on bond (he was already out on bond for another violent assault) and may return to kill her. Therefore, she likely saw killing Buras as the only way to save her own life.

We believe the justice system should be merciful towards Ms. Buras. If Derrick Buras is determined to have killed Deputy Howell, Ms. Buras should not be charged and be allowed an opportunity to get her life in order and make a fresh start. Especially considering the millions of dollars that would have gone towards trial and incarceration costs.

This is one where I do miss Ken Hamblin having a national talk show and his playing Taps in honor of the officers fallen in the line of duty. This instance underscores one of the arguments for Federally restricting the Second amendment rights of violators of criminal domestic violence by fiat, though making CDV a felony accompishes the same puropse in most states. Kudos to the perp's estranged wife and a vote for acquittal here on vehicular manslaughter charges, she acted in self defense against an armed threat that already presumptively killed an officer.

I'M SORRY FOR THE LOST OF DEPUTY HOWELL. BUT DERRICK BURAS WAS NOT A PIECE OF CRAP. HE WAS ONLY A HUMAN BEING THAT HAD A HARD LIFE. I KNOW THE SITUATION PERSONALLY AND SHE WOULD NOT LEAVE HIM ALONE.

hey, when you're gonna whine, how about take the caps lock off?

lots of people have hard lives, but don't go out and do what he'd done, both the night he killed howell and what he was out on bond for doing.

he came after her that night. he attacked her that night. i'd hardly consider that her harassing him.

earl called it right - he was a useless piece of crap. once the cororner is done with him, they ought to dump his body back where they found him and leave his ass for the vultures.

Domestic Violence is one of the most lethal aspects of a cops life. We certainly wish the Deputy's family well and we should keep them in our prayers to the most high GOD. No matter what your upbringing or problems there is no excuse for what Mr. Buras did. He could had walked away from it if he was harrassed by his wife. I also hope the law gives her a break.

Sorry but I disagree. Derrick Buras was a very wonderful person and did not deserve to die by some piece of trash wife. He was loved by many people I knew him personally and I loved him! He was a great friend. I hope they slam the book in her face for what she did. If the court system dont get her someone will its just a matter of time. RIP Derrick u will b missed!!

What I find truly amazing is that while so many people have computers, giving them access to more information and learning resources than any time in human history, so many people who get online clearly haven't progressed much beyond sixth grade.

Such proof can be found in the comments by the Buras Cop Killer fan club. These people are more concerned about their dear friend than anyone who was on the receiving end of his many acts of violence.

Cooper, I was quite entertained by your amazingly low level of literacy. When confronted by such grotesque examples of miscenegation, one must attempt to find a degree of entertainment in it, lest the reality which is represented by such unenlightened discourse become even more evident than it already is.

In your shrill attempt at substantive discourse, I found several misspellings and punctuation errors. Really - which fast-food joint do you work the late shift at?

I am the author of this blog, whose name is in the title. Should it be verified that Mr. Buras was the one who killed the deputy, I would readily endorse the anonymous poster's recommendation that the body of your cop-killing punk buddy should be returned to the scene of the crime, and left to feed the vultures, flies and others who might find some use for an otherwise useless piece of human crap.

I sure as hell won't miss him.

TO MR.EARL CAPPS DERRICK WAS A PERSON. THEIR IS ALOT OF PEOPLE OUT HERE IN THIS WORLD THAT HAVE KILLED PEOPLE AND I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH SHIT TALKED ABOUT THEM THAT HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT DERRICK. WHAT MAKES THE DEPUTY A GOOD PERSON JUST BECAUSE HE WAS A COP THATS JUST A JOB. WHAT ABOUT ALL THESE PEOPLE OUT HERE KILLING
KIDS.HOW COME THEY ARE NOT A PIECE OF CRAP. WHAT ABOUT THE ARMY THEY ARE KILLING. AND YOU DONT EVEN KNOW HIM SO WHY ARE YOU GOING TO MISS HIM.
  10. Earl Capps 8/5/08 10:21
I'm not going to miss him, and anyone who would miss a psychotic brute like that is truly sick.

I'm sure the many people he has assaulted but not killed won't miss him either.

Or are you going to insist none of that was his fault?
  11. MRS.COOPER 9/5/08 00:13
WHY SHOULD EVERY THING BE BLAME ON HIM. NOBODY KNOWS WHAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP WAS BEHINED THERE DOORS. SHE COULD OF STARTED THE FIGHTS. WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS HOW COME SHE DIDN'T WAIT TIL THE NEXY MORNING TO GO AND GET HER STUFF WHAT IS 6 MORE HOURS. MAYBE SHE WANTED THIS TO HAPPEN. NOBODY WILL NEVER KNOW THE REAL STORY. SO QUIT BLAMEING DERRICK.

Mrs. Cooper, if you've got so much free time on your hands to defend a cop killer, why don't you spend a little time in Adult Ed? You could use it.
  13. Anonymous 9/5/08 07:21
So now we hear that this whole thing was a setup? The guy's estranged wife was trying to get a cop killed. Oh man, I've heard it all now.

Lady, the last poster had the right idea - get off the computer and sign up for some adult literacy courses.
  14. Anonymous 9/5/08 12:15
Earl, I think you're trying to be too nice to people. If this was my site, I'd delete every one of those comments.

Nobody MADE him shoot that deputy, any more than they made him do any of the other crimes that he did.

  16. Patrick Cook 10/5/08 12:27

I also knew Derrick or "Duke" personally. I couldn't stand him from the time I met him. Maybe all you who are stepping up in his defense should read this article http://www.thetandd.com/articles/2008/05/09/news/doc4824de0270e22340285389.txt and then think about what kind of person would take someone's life out of rage. Tiffany acted in self defense. She was leaving him and it pissed him off. Even if she started the problems, he could have walked away instead of doing what he did. He acted like the crazed maniac that he was and killed an officer and then tried to kill his wife and sister-in-law. In my opinion, justice has been served. Sorry, good for nothing, low-life scum has been removed from the face of this earth. I will be keeping Tiffany and her family, as well as Deputy Howell's family in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that Tiffany and her sister are able to go on with their lives peacefully and no charges are pressed against them.

Amber, your comments are not going to be posted. Not only are they the worst examples of grammar that I've ever encountered, but the language is terrible.

Take some advice - go to adult ed, learn to spell, get a GED. You'll go much farther in life than you will talking and writing like an inbreed.

Maybe your prince shouldn't have killed a deputy in cold blood. Then we wouldn't care what kind of white trash he was, or what kind you are.
  19. Earl Capps 19/8/08 23:54
Amber, keep trying and you're still not getting posted because you don't know how to talk and behave like a human being.

Just readig the info about all this and my opinion would be.
Number one, just because a person doesn't have the skill to properly speak their mind on paper or computers doesn"t or shouldn"t keep their reasoning out of the picture.
Also, from my own experiences thru a violent marriage in the 70.s-80's when we had no place to call or feel safe.Sadly some died.Thank God the system woke up and realized the statistics of what was happening to us and were ignored,I say until you've been there, nobody will know how she felt, why she reacted in the way she did. Or any of that. And she was clearly acting in self-defense.
So, to make it short, I think the whole situation is sad.And shame on you for taking time to find ways in words how to just keep on and on and not think for a second that alot of lives were changed as a result of and insult to blame anyone in such a tragic event.
Could you live with it, any of it, and keep sane, try it, then you won't be so quick to not only be arrigant, but even crewl voicing an opinion.Have you people even given the end result a sincere, sympathic ear to any of the people who not just endured it,but still live with it?
JUST A INNOCENT BYSTANDER READING SOME OF THIS>
AND COULDNT RESIST A CHANCE TO ADD WHAT I THOUGHT.
I DO KNOW ONE OF THE PEOPLE,BUT NOT ENOUGH TO SAY I REALLY KNOW THIS PERSON,BUT ENOUGH TO RESPOND TO THE TOPIC AT HAND.

To all of you who are defending Derrick, or "Duke" as I knew him; you all need some serious help. First off your stories are all wrong. I know first hand what happen and you are wrong about how Duke died. Second of all, I have seen Duke probably every day since he started dating Tiffany. The first day I ever met Duke, he was standing at my front door with Nappy holding a shot gun and asked "we is Tiffany?" Then he said when I find her I will kill her. That was before they even started dating. I can't imagine what he did to her while they where in a relationship. I remember driving her to the Police department in the middle of the night because she came home with blood all over her face from Duke punching her in the face and breaking her nose. What a sweet man hitting a woman. You all need to get some sense. Duke made his own decisions that night. Nobody told him to pick up a gun and shoot the cop. He did that so he could kill Tiffany. Did anyone mention that he held her hostage for nearly 12 hours that day and beat her? No? No one? Well I know a good man when I see one and Duke was not a good one. He was a violent man who didn't care about anybody but himself. Deputy William Howell Jr is gone forever and his family, friends, Tiffany and her sister are going to live with this loss for the rest of their life. Duke needed to die. If he wasn't killed many other lives would be lost. It was the only way he could be stopped.
