GOP's Marvin Rogers surprises in bid for House District 49

What’s unusual about the people in this photo?

Aside from York County GOP House candidate Marvin Rogers, all but one of the others plan to vote for Barack Obama for President … and then cross over to support Rogers in his bid to replace outgoing State Representative Bessie Moody-Lawrence this November.

On Monday, several community leaders from the predominantly-black south side of Rock Hill, the county’s last major bastion of Democratic voting strength, announced their support for Roger’s candidacy. Nearly 100 people turned out at the All Star restaurant in this part of Rock Hill, mostly black and residents of the community, to join these leaders in supporting Rogers.

The speakers praised Rogers’ record of involvement in the community. Rogers has been active in a number of organizations, including Interfaith Hospitality Network and Head Start. Speakers endorsing Rogers included:

Dr. Jennifer Disney, a Political Science professor at Winthrop Univeristy and the President of A Place for Hope, endorsed Rogers and criticized his opponent for only being seen in the Blackmon Road community when he had an opportunity to do a photo-op with John Edwards.

Other attendees included:
  • Kashaka Kikelomo, Director of the First Steps program in Rock Hill County Schools who said “Marvin has boots on the ground. He’s in the community.”
  • Donna Berry, the founder of A Place for Hope.
  • Cedric Thompson, founder of the Reach Back youth program.
  • Candace Thompson, a local real estate banker and cheer leading coach in local schools.
This district is about evenly balanced between Republican voters south and west of Rock Hill and black voters in Rock Hill and York. The county’s robust Republican Party is sure to maximize GOP voter turnout in the district, putting Rogers within striking distance of winning the seat. If Monday’s press conference is any indication, Rogers could be assembling the kind of bipartisan and multicultural coalition he'll need to score a major upset in November.

Stay tuned.

I don't live in the district however, if I did I would support Marvin over the other guy. I've heard many great things about Marvin and think he would make a great representative for that district.

I was in attendance at this coalition press conference. I do live in and own a business in the district and I fully support Marvin in his efforts to truly be a voice for our district.

I'm for Marvin. We need someone who is about his community, NOT a political hitchhiker who puts his ambition over people.

John King and his entire family are a bunch of crooks. Believe me, I know all of them. Apples don't fall far from the tree.

Marvin Rogers is a scholar and a gentleman. He understands communities and he understands politics. What a winning combination!

York County would have a great asset in the state house if they send Marvin Rogers to Columbia.

Marvin is a truly honest man and worthy of the districts support. He is interested in the PEOPLE of the district and really wants to make change. He is socially conservative but a man who understands the economic plight of the community. He is as not well known as is competitor but he is definately the right man for the job. I certainly hope he will win.

Great story on Marvin Rodgers. He’s a good man and puts his shoe leather where his mouth is.

I was there, and heard some of the best speeches of the campaign from the group in the picture you ran. They represented varied political interests and appeared to be an indicator that Americans are not necessarily seeking Party lines – just desperately trying to understand and discern who will best be able to serve without becoming infected with the "inside the beltway virus" that ignores the voters who put them there.

This is the same reason that Governor Sarah Palin has received such admiration across the board!

Marvin comes from great roots! Having gone to high school with Marvin, I can honestly say that Marvin was always kind, honest, positive and just an all around great guy! If I lived in the area, I'd vote for him. You couldn't have asked for a better man to represent you!!! GOOOO MARVIN!!!

I am JACQUELINE WILSON not ANONYMOUS, so therefore when you make statements about my family, and my canidate have the balls to come corect, identify yourself, you spineless coward. To begin with where did Marvin Rogers come from, what are his bypartisin issues that benifit the citizens of disrict 49! he has made no inpact nor any contributions to the Black community nor the citizens of district 49, he is just a pawn another ignorant plot of diversion by right wing conservatives, who have screwed up the entire economy, and it is a insult that a Black man would allow himself to be manipulated into having his name associated with a party that has upset wall street, not to mention the fact that their politic do not begin to embrace the conserns of the middle class let a lone the trailor trash thatare making less than 500 thousand dollars a year. It is time out for Blacks to be used and brain washed into thinking republicans are sensitive poor your needs in the hood. Is your coprenhesion so inhibited, or do you simply have no clue. I have left my name I am not a coward, so when you attack my family, the democratic party, have enough conviction to leave your name! Don't make reference to my family as crooks, if you don't have issues are integrety don't hide ,debate me anytime any where and all district 49 will be able to put a face behind the ignorance of Anonymous. You have people in your party using the N word at a sarah Palin rally who just happen to not be able to run her own house a 17 year old pregnant with a bastard by a n word according to the inertnet You Tube. and these are suppose to be acceptable values condoning this, had this been one of Obama daughters Hanity would have had a field day, but all America is suppose to embrace this as some new American dream. on last evening during the debate McCain , every white person he respond to by name the Black young lady whom did not have what white america precieves as a difficult ethinic name, her name was Tipphany, view the footage the prejudice bastard, did not take the time to look at her nor address her by name and you ANONYMOUS dare associate yourself with people of this mentality check yourself Uncle Tom and ignorant trailor trash see me, comne correct!

Marvin is a man of integrity, Character and Hope for a City that has had no representation in over 20 years. What the people of this district do not understand with the Republican controlled House and Senate, Marvin as a freshman would have more power in the house then John King any given day. He would be able to go to Columbia and ask the for to give him the resources he needs to improve his district this something that the people of Rock Hill deserve and something that the present Represenative or John King cannot deliver.

Mr. King jumps from County to County claiming he lives here and there to gain a office that I am unsure he would ever fulfill its full term. Mr. Kong has been elected to two offices one as a City Councilmember and One as a County Council member. He left both of them seats to seek other seats becuase of his own self rigtheous ego and not for the people of Chester. And now he is back in York County trying to obtain a house seat, Which if he did nothing in Chester why do we want him here! Personally credibilty does matter, Service to your constituents does matter John King has not been credible nor accountable to the people of Chester. Why do we want him here in York County we already have enough elected officials in throughout South Carolina that fit the mold of John King.

get over this 'democrat this, republican that', it doesnt really matter at this point. on a macro level, it does matter but on a micro level we just need someone who actually cares about you and the person you are and will do anything at his power for you IMMEDIATELY. lets just look at marvin rogers who is the new face and only HAPPENS to be a republican. if you even have been to any of his rallies or debates, he is THE HAND-ON candidate that is ACTION ORIENTED and is already working for you and your district. he is always present, and will explain any front or platform he has to anyone in their home or anyplace for that matter if you asked him to. have you actually seen john king at any of the venues at your district just hanging out and really engaging with the people of district 49 much less talking with the people of this district. i think not, but i have seen marvin rogers do that and many a times. mr. king may be the democrat wanting to represent but its only the same party, all talk and status but no action, and moreso no change. hes someone whos very political and puts his ambition over the people--and yes hes the democrat here. but marvin is one of you and includes himself as an integral part of what you are fighting for. he would be physically right by your side helping you fix your problems or whatever it is that you are wanting to change. dont be small minded by the fact that he is a republican but open your minds to what he has actually created and done to get so many people to back him and support him--and they are people of your very district. for God sakes, he is a humanitarian and has proven himself, and who else better to fight for YOU and with conviction!!

Jacqueline Wilson--I am disappointed in you. If my memory serves me correctly, I met you during the democractic primaries. You were a huge supporter of John King--as I was the opponent. The night I met you at Winthrop I found you to be a ver charming and intelligent lady. I was taken aback and quite frankly, embarrassed, at the pure ignorance you have public espoused. I certainly hope you don't represent the sentiment of Mr. King's campaign. I certainly hope to see a posting from him denouncing this. We can disagree on candidates and positions, but we don't have to stoop to this trash. Certainly, someone called John a "slimebag." Well, that's unfortunate, too. But, I learned when you decide to become a public figure, as John has, you open yourself up to that type of criticism. Ms. Wilson--you are a lady of decency and class; please refrain from making a public mockery of yourself. In closing, I was led to this page by friends who have been passing this around discussing your ignorance. They missed your message and focused on your frequent misspelled words and grammatically incorrect sentences.

Mr. Belton - I think you hit the nail on the head.

Frankly, I approved her comment for its entertainment value. It sounds like it's been, in a sort of sad way, quite entertaining.

I'd like to thank you for taking the time to visit the Blogland. Please feel free to come back and join the discussion.

Well I certainly denounce my opponent Mr. King being called a "slimebag" and his family being called "crooks." I have news for you- John King is my friend. We have a great rapport when we see each other. I don't view my campaign as a run against John King as much as I see it as a run for the hopes, aspirations and upward mobility of the people in District 49. Thank you for your interest in our race!

I coached Marvin in high school. he was a great student athlete and I would be proud to vote for him if I lived in Rock Hill. I always knew he was destined for greatness!!
