DeMint's demented primary opponent

In the world of politics, one sees lots of strange things, but one of the strangest recent sights is that of Susan Gaddy, who filed at the last minute to challenge Senator Jim DeMint in the June Republican Primary.

It happens that Gaddy has a long record of political activism - as a Democrat. Most recently as the Democratic precinct President from Daniel Island Precinct in Berkeley County, where she blasted both John McCain and George W. Bush in October 2008 in an op-ed in the Daniel Island News.

Barack Obama has detailed a tax plan that would restore some fairness to our American economic system. It would put money in the pockets of the many, and, yes, the rich would have to go back to paying what they did under President Reagan – not exactly painful.

The Obama proposal would benefit millions of South Carolinians – with a $500 per worker, or $1,000 per working family – tax credit. On top of that Obama’s plan would give a $1,000 rebate check to every family to offset the huge increase in energy costs brought to us by the two former oilmen now working in the White House. I think the people of Charleston will put that money to better use than the McCain-Bush billionaires club.

Do the math for yourself: Enough is enough. America needs a change of direction.

Yes, indeed, let's hope our readers tuned into what Gaddy is saying and do the math for themselves.

She may have had a change of heart.

A lot of us who are involved in the Greenville legal community and local politics up here know this woman. She lived up here and must have moved to Charleston a few years ago. She was the chair of the Greenville County Democratic Women's Club and was involved in all sorts of fundraising activities for Democrat candidates. If memory serves correctly she was always one of those "host committee" types trying to raise money for folks like Steve Benjamin and Jim Hodges. She's also not some sort of "crazy woman" like this Cogdill lady running for Lite Guv--Susan Gaddy was at one time the chair of the USC Law Alumni Council, and I think she's really close with the Sanders/Nettles crowd.

John, then how would you explain how someone with such a record of Democratic activism would suddenly show up in a GOP primary? If not crazy, then what's up with her?

I guess I wasn't clear in my comments, Earl. I'm not defending her or anything. I'm a staunch Republican but know a lot of Democrats in Greenville who ran with the same crowds as she did. What I'm suggesting is that there is an obvious ulterior motive in her running. And that's what I've heard just from talking to some folks in Greenville. I don't want to spread too much of what I've heard semi-anonymously on a blog, but the thinking a lot of people have is that some in the SCDP approached Gaddy with the idea that she run, throw some punches at DeMint to muddy the water, force him to spend some money that he otherwise would be able to save for the general. From what I have heard Gaddy is close with Carol Fowler and personal friends with Democratic operative Trav Robertson.

Maybe this is all speculation...but if any of it is true, then you may be right in that she is crazy enough to allow herself to be put up for this plan, which isn't that great of one anyway.
