Breakfast in Berkeley: Hundreds of people, dozens of candidates & straw polls too

Over 200 people turned out in Goose Creek for a standing-room only event at the May meeting of the Berkeley County Republican Breakfast Club.

Even the disgraced former Chair, Wade Arnette, whose failed attempt to hijack the group two years ago rallied the group to new turnout records, was there.

Candidates from statewide races down to county offices were there a'plenty. By our count, about two dozen of them were on hand and spoke to the crowd. The event included a straw poll which polled the audience's support of candidates for major statewide and regional offices, as follows:

U.S. Senate
Jim DeMint 198
Susan Gaddy 20

Governor
Nikki Haley 69
Andre Bauer 50

On the first Saturday in May, five bucks gets you a great breakfast and a front-row seat on Election 2010. You can't get a better deal than that, and our hats are off to Charles Schuster, Nancy Corbin and the others who worked long and hard to put today's event together.

That was definitely the biggest turnout I've ever seen at the breakfast. Also the most fun I've ever had, it was great to hear from and talk to so many candidates.

I've seen that large a turn out before, though there weren't as many Fair Tax folks or 9-12'ers (which didn't yet exist).

Notable in their absence, with the exception of two that were serving their weekend warrior (one taking the straw poll in his race), are a number of locals in respecrtive races. I'll not shame them here, though I do leave those with the gift of sarcasm to tempt Earl's moderation.

Also of note, it only took Pravda und Kurier three days to mention the event and the outcome of the straw poll...

You know why they took so long?

Because it took that long for them to read Earl's blog. Stupid slackasses.

I witnessed one 1st Congressional Candidate (not the straw poll winner), tell his campaign worker to buy twenty or thirty more breakfast tickets (straw poll ballots) than they had actual people. The poll results may have been slightly skewed but the American Legion and the Berkeley County Republican Breakfast Club benefited. Thank you Mr. "I Cheat But I didn't Win", you "epitomize" the dignity and honor of the US Constitution!

We had 243 breakfast tickets sold, and we always have a number of people that just come to listen so my estimate is between 270 and 280 in attendance. I sent the results of the straw poll out the same day so I am not sure why it took P&C so long to note it. I guess better late then never.
