Small field for House District 100 special election

Filing closed for the special election to fill Berkeley County's District 100 seat in the State House and it looks like the race will be a quiet one with just two candidates filing - one from both major parties.

Chairman Republican Eddie Southard, the current Chair of the Berkeley County Planning Commission, will take on Democratic Tonia Aiken-Taylor, a storefront pastor who is in her second year on Moncks Corner Town Council.

The seat, which covers much of central Berkeley County has seldom attracted much interest since it was last open in 2002 and is a strongly Republican district. Next year, the seat's area will shrink as it gives up it's southern-most precincts to make room for a new House District.

Expect Southard to win this seat without much effort, but a strong candidacy by Aiken-Taylor may help position her for a second House candidacy next year, when a large part of Moncks Corner will be moved into neighboring House District 102, currently held by Democrat Joe Jefferson.
