House candidate rejection appeal denied
Some people just don't know when to quit. Even when the truth is right in front of them.
That's how one could characterize the ongoing complaint process being waged in GOP circles by Thomas Muse, an Horry County resident who was disqualified from running for House District 68 because he doesn't live in the district.
In spite of the fact, it appears that Muse won't allow constitutionally-defined residency requirements to get in the way, informing the state Republican Party in an email that "I am committed to supporting the citizens of District 68 and will not abandon them simply because I was drawn out of the district."
Not suprisingly, the state GOP denied the appeal of his disqualification, with a lettter from SCGOP director Matt Moore telling him the law is the law regarding residency issues:
You acknowledge in your letter that your long-time place of residence is 1786 Juniper Drive, Conway, SC 29526. This address is in House District 68 as drawn following the 2000 census. However, the June 12, 2012 primary will use district lines as drawn following the 2010 census. Your place of residence is located in the new House District 105.
The South Carolina Constitution (Article III, Section 7) states, “A candidate for the Senate or House of Representatives must be a legal resident of the district in which he is a candidate at the time he files for the office.” At the time you filed for office, you were not a legal resident of the new House District 68.
Certifying your candidacy in House District 68 would be in direct conflict with our State Constitution and undoubtedly cause your name to be removed from the ballot. Ours is a party of the law, and upholding the State Constitution is paramount.
Getting drawn out of a district means you're either going to have to move or run for the district which you reside in. House District 105 is an open seat this year with a six-candidate primary field. Maybe Mr. Muse felt he didn't want - or didn't have the resources - to compete in such a crowded field.
Since he failed to read a map and drug this process out past filing deadlines, in spite of being warned (by his own admission), now he can't run for District 68 and it's too late to file for District 105.
For the benefit of our readers, a map of the new district is provided.
Don't ask this guy for directions. Not only will he get you lost, but he might blame you.
