Whips, ex-wives & Dick Withington - or else

It seems that perennial Horry County candidate Dick Withington has been dazed and confused for so long that he filed to run for three offices in the June Republican Primary: his bid for the Seventh Congressional District, as well as challenging Senator Ray Cleary and Representative Nelson Hardwick to primary contests as well.

But it gets better - he expects his ex-wife to come help him campaign for some of these offices.

Yes, he really said that - and the story gets even more surreal.

While dual office-holding is illegal in South Carolina, it's not illegal to run for more than one office at the same time. To address any potential problems, he has promised that if he wins more than one office (yeah, right), he will turn down the lesser offices that he wins.

We've been told by several sources that prior to the opening of filing, Withington contacted a number of Grand Strand Republicans, demanding campaign contributions in exchange for not running against several legislators. Those sources didn't give money but all told us they found his appeals "entertaining".

But this is a guy to whom the unusual seems normal. According to John Sweeney of SCNOW:

Unorthodox? Yes, but that’s sort of Withington’s modus operandi. Remember that this is the same guy who has shown up to multiple campaign events with props, ranging from Uncle Sam business cards to a whip and a sword, to get his policies across.

While threats, bondage and S&M might float some people's boats, we think it's a terrible way to try to win over voters.

One of his opponents this year is Rep. Hardwick, who he challeged as a Democrat in 2004. Hardwick beat him soundly that year with roughly two-thirds of the vote (9958 to 5239).

But Withington is a guy who doesn't let losing stop him from losing again. Two years ago, he dropped out of running for the First Congressional District as a Democrat only to run for Horry County Council as a Republican.

A story this strange we can't possibly make up - and it just seems to get stranger as it goes.

I just wonder... Is he related to Morgan Bruce Reeves by any chance?

Withington has burned all bridges in the Pee Dee and doesn't have a chance in the GOP Primary. He has cancelled speaking engagements and pre-scheduled visits in Chesterfield, Marion, and Florence Counties. In cancelling, he told those counties that they weren't important to winning and if he couldn't get any money out of the trip it would be a waste of his time/money/effort.
